Day One

“Baltimore County is full of diversity and an amazing place to live.”  - Jose Rivas

Back in November I had to make a choice.  I had narrowed my choices for a spring internship down to two options.  First was the Baltimore City Paper.   I was eager to start writing for an alternative publication and the fact that I would be in the greatest city in the country, Baltimore, was an added incentive.

My second choice was an internship at The Avenue News, a much smaller publication that covers all of east Baltimore County.  While working with The Avenue News I would be able to cover news that’s happening in my own town which I think would be interesting.

I ultimately decided on spending my final semester at Towson University interning at The Avenue News this spring.  I was told during my interview with the Baltimore City Paper that I would mainly be doing data entry and getting coffee.  There would be a slim chance I would even be given a chance to write an article.  But with The Avenue News, with only one editor covering all of eastern Baltimore County, I was sure I would be given the opportunity to write several stories during my stay at the paper.

Still, leading up to my first day I was still unsure if the choice I had made was the right one.  After my first day there were no more uncertainties.  The first hour into my internship we interviewed Jose Rivas, a Realtor in Baltimore County.  Hearing about how he moved to Baltimore County from Miami I was reminded how great of an area east Baltimore County truly is.

Also, it didn’t hurt that when we finally found our way back to the office I was given not one, but two stories to work on “to keep me busy.”  So check back often to be kept up to date with all the happenings in eastern Baltimore County and how I’m going about putting it all into print.
